The Bund, Shanghai’s preeminent public space, stretches 1.8 kilometers along the Huangpu River waterfront.

Bank buildings and customs houses, built in the 19th century by Western powers in grand Beaux-Arts style, symbolized Shanghai’s economic might.

To reconnect the city to the waterfront, the Bund restoration buried a highway and replaced it with landscaped parks, pedestrian promenades and a safer, at-grade boulevard.

Landscaping, installations, plazas, grand steps and pavilions are interspersed along the Bund. New towers rise across the river in the Pudong district.

Ramps, steps and folded landscapes help negotiate the grade changes between the boulevard and waterfront.

Once again characterized by grandeur, the Bund unfurls beneath the historic skyline that made Shanghai famous.

外滩，一条沿着上海黄浦江西岸的1.8公里长的林荫大道，已经作为城市卓越的公共空间被改建。
在19世纪末期，外滩曾是亚洲的金融中心。由英国，美国和其他西方势力以宏伟的装饰艺术风格建造的银行大楼和海关大楼，代表了上海经济的强盛。 但在1990年代之前，外滩已经被10条车道的道路堵住，使城市与河流以及滨江步道隔离开来。
在2010年世博会准备期间，城市举办了一次国际设计竞赛对外滩进行改建以重现辉煌。NBBJ的解决方案：在地下隧道中隐藏6条交通通道，打造了一个更安全的人行环境并加宽现有的滨江步道。公共空间与沿着一侧街道的城市重新连接起来，从而把滨江地带与上海的其它部分融合在一起。
如今，在上海著名的历史天际线下，景观，设施，广场，大台阶和凉亭一一展开，外滩已经重建其宏伟的气势。在一天中的所有时段，游客和居民都喜欢沿着连接新旧中国的滨江进行休憩，野餐，娱乐或单纯是散步。
